At Jewellery By Design we have all you need to know about diamonds.

The "4 C's"

Cut of the stone.

Diamonds have proportions and it’s very important to get this right. Shallow diamonds offer a wide spread but lack the reflective qualities of a medium cut stone. Again deep stones may seem good value but again it will dull the reflective properties.

Colour of the stone.

Although diamonds can be found in many colours, most are white and have a tendency to “draw colour”. That is they look slightly yellow or brown. Diamond grades start at “D” for white or “blue white”. As a diamonds gets progressively more colour the grade descends down the alphabet.

Carat wieght of the stone.

Diamonds are sold by weight “Carat weight”. Note that a diamond that is twice the weight as another is not twice the size across the stone. Diamonds are weighed on scales that are so accurate that they’re shielded against any wind or draft by glass shatters.

Clarity of the stone.

Because diamonds are born from the earth and are a result of pure chance many contain imperfections. Marks or illusions that remain inside the crystal they were cut from. That’s why flawless stones command a higher price.
